Moving with Compassion in Uncertain Times As nature stretches awake from its long rest, its growth reaching back toward us, many of us feel that same pull—to move, to act, to emerge into something new. But unlike the trees and flowers, we humans tend to overthink our own growth. The path forward can feel tangled in uncertainty, our minds full of choices to weigh, worries to sort through, and so many opportunities for overwhelm. When fear grips us, when we feel frozen in uncertainty or fused with the weight of it all, even the thought of meaningful action can feel impossible. In these moments, when hopelessness or helplessness creeps in, it helps to return to something steady—something within us that does not change: our capacity for empathy. Empathy, for ourselves and all living beings, can serve as a gateway to greater self-compassion. And when we cultivate self-compassion, we soften. We move with more thoughtfulness, tenderness, and care—not just for the world around us, but for the parts of ourselves that feel afraid, stuck, or uncertain. Rather than pushing these parts away, we can acknowledge them, tend to them, and in doing so, loosen their grip. Struggle begins to feel less like something to fix and more like something to hold with kindness. Compassion-focused change isn’t about forcing action. It’s about creating the conditions within ourselves that make wise, intentional action possible. This month, I want to share a practice that has been meaningful to me and the folks I work with: Loving-Kindness Meditation, also known as Metta. It’s a practice of extending care—first to ourselves, then outward—creating a sense of connection and purpose. I originally wrote and shared this meditation at Irvington Counseling Collective’s Peace Pole Ceremony on the Spring Solstice, and I offer it to you now, as an invitation to ground yourself in compassion as you discern your next right step.
