What does it mean to cultivate joy, even amidst struggle? As human beings, we are born to express, to move, to createโto shape the elements of nature, space, and time into something meaningful beyond mere survival. This impulse is not merely a desire; it is an inherent part of who we are. Throughout history, our ancestors have embraced expression and the pursuit of joy as acts of survival, resilience, and resistance. The earliest humans collected objects of beauty and put them on display, simply for pleasure. Enslaved people have sung inspired songs of defiant joy. Viktor Frankl, imprisoned in Nazi concentration camps, clung to the vision of embracing his familyโa hope that, though uncertain, sustained him in the most horrific moments. Thich Nhat Hanh, exiled from his homeland, spoke of "taking refuge in the island within," reminding us that presence and joy can be found in the here and now. And Queer kids have always thrown some of the best dance parties. Across time, we can learn that cultivating joy through expression is an act of liberation. To create, to sing, to imagine, to move: these are not luxuries. Cultivation of joy is an essential act of defiance against despair. Through whatever means that is life giving and enriching to you, I invite us all to join together in creating meaning that satiates our human drive for connection, creativity and expression.
